One Christian’s views on racism and gay rights

Reading Time: 3 minutes

This topic is the reason I wanted not to do this blogging challenge.

This topic made me ask my mentor’s thoughts and also do a lot of reading. In fact I read a lot, I was burned out, confused and in conflict.

This is the topic I was avoiding.

You see in these days, Christians are asked where they stand on different issues just so people can validate whether Christianity is a ‘good religion’ or not.

In these days, Christians shy away from these topics, so that to make people comfortable, to make Christianity appealing to more people, personal reasons or just leave it all to God to judge.

I am a Christian, who believes God is the final judge of everything and also the Bible is His Word, the direction of how we are to live our lives, the roadmap to this journey we are on.

Let’s start with racism

When I was 21, I took my first tour out of Africa, I went to China. One night we went to the mall to buy chocolates, and my friend took a lift and I was left on the ground floor.

While waiting for the lift, The Chinese kids surrounded me and were touching my skin and were wondering where I was from and all that jazz. Their parents were on the other side, you could see it in their faces that they were shocked and did not know what to do to stop what their kids were doing.

I didn’t know at that time, but my friend told me later on, that what happened to me was unacceptable. I kept on saying that they were just kids, but whenever I remember their parent’s face, I think there was more to it too.

Racism is unacceptable, it is inhuman and devalues the other person.

We were all created to glorify God with our differences in fact every culture and all our differences introduces us to an aspect of God that we don’t see/learn/experience in our culture.

No race is above another race, no person is above another person, before Christ we are all equal. I read this book called bloodlines that was really helpful to me in understanding racial relations, I hope it will be helpful to you too.

We are all sisters and brothers, no matter what your skin looks like.

There is this behaviour where we Blacks say, ‘oh a white person is smart look what he/she did’ or a ‘Chinese person this, a Chinese person that’. This is wrong.

“Yet You have made him a little lower than God, And You have crowned him with glory and honor. You made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet”
PSALMS 8:5‭-‬6 AMP

All of us, black, white, brown are equal before God. And we should treat the other person the way we want to be treated.

Let’s talk about gay rights, shall we?!

We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. All of us, gay or straight.

“Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit or have any share in the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate [by perversion], nor those who participate in homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers [whose words are used as weapons to abuse, insult, humiliate, intimidate, or slander], nor swindlers will inherit or have any share in the kingdom of God. And such were some of you [before you believed]. But you were washed [by the atoning sacrifice of Christ], you were sanctified [set apart for God, and made holy], you were justified [declared free of guilt] in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the [Holy] Spirit of our God [the source of the believer’s new life and changed behavior]”.

Th Bible says homosexuality is sin, so is stealing, lying, killing, jealousy, greedy, insulting and etc.

Even in the verse I shared above, Paul talks about homosexuality, he doesn’t separate it from others, but address it with all these other sins. Why do we exalt it separately??

It is amazing how we look down on, hate, stop them from attending our churches and even kill gays.

— If we are to follow the law, then let’s follow it in all sins.

–If you think you have a right to kill gay people, kill those who envy as well.

–If we stop gay people from attending our church services, let’s stop liars as well.

Why do we put one sin as if it is a terrible sin than the others, when they all hold equal measure in God’s eyes?? When all are the reasons Christ came and died for us??

We all need God’s grace, gay or straight liar/fornicator/ killer and etc.

We all need grace.

All I am saying is let’s walk in this journey together while loving and acknowledging the grace we have all been shown in Christ, it is God who is the just judge who can judge as all justly.

If we only love those who look like us, how is that different from unbelievers?? Even they do the same thing.
