I believe mental health is as important as physical health. If someone is sick physical, we go to the moon and Mars and back to help them, we should do the same with someone who has a mental health illness.

Anyway so here are couple books that I’ve read that have helped me understand mental health issues better from personal experiences:

Lori Gottlieb : Maybe You Should Talk to Someone: A Therapist, HER Therapist, and Our Lives Revealed

I loved this book because she talked about therapy, and how there is always that one issue that takes you to therapy only to realize that, that was just a tip of an iceberg.

Whitney Cummings : I’m Fine…And Other Lies

This book talks about all the issues that Whitney had, and I related to it so much.

Matt Haig : Reasons to Stay Alive

This books is about depression, struggles of a person with mental illness and suicidal thoughts and gives reasons to stay alive. You belong here, there is more to see in the world, better days are ahead of you. Don’t kill yourself.

Amber Smith : The Way I Used to Be

This book is about some of the mental health issues that a person who has been sexually assaulted struggle with, if you really want to understand them better, read this book.

Also Read : Millennials guide to keeping your sanity with all the issues going on in the world

Karyl McBride : Will I Ever Be Good Enough? Healing the Daughters of Narcissistic Mothers

This is about dealing with emotional abuse from a narcissistic parent. How to know a narcissist and heal from an emotional abuse.

Phoebe Robinson : Everything is trash, but it’s okay

This has a chapter about workaholism. Now being a workaholic is an addiction but research has shown that there is a psychological drive and impact from workaholism. They say most workaholics have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder as well.. So read more about this topic, I’m too.

Gabourey Sidibe : This is just my face : Try not to stare

She talked about eating disorders and depression a lot in this book. And I also love how she talks about going to therapy as well.

The books I’ve chosen are mostly written from a personal experience except a few and I recommend them because I want us to understand that this is a human struggle and to learn how we can effectively support people in our lives when they are dealing with mental health issues.
